Linguistic History

Egyptian Arabic evolved from Classical Arabic brought by Arab conquerors in the 7th century CE, blending with remnants of Coptic — the final stage of the ancient Egyptian language. Over centuries it absorbed vocabulary from Coptic, Ottoman Turkish, French, Italian, and English. Today it is the most widely understood Arabic dialect in the world, largely through the influence of Egyptian cinema, television, and music. Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) remains the language of formal writing, education, and official media.
