Linguistic History
Spanish arrived in Ecuador with the conquistadors in the early 16th century, rapidly replacing or marginalising the Quechua that the Inca Empire had itself spread across the region. Quechua — known locally as Kichwa — remains spoken by roughly 500,000 Indigenous people in the Andean highlands and Amazon basin. Ecuadorian Spanish is notable for its clear, unhurried Andean pronunciation, widely considered among the easiest varieties to understand in all of Latin America.
