Linguistic History

Cuban Spanish is a Caribbean variety, descended from the Canarian and Andalusian dialects brought by the earliest waves of Spanish settlers. It is characterised by the weakening or dropping of final consonants, rapid speech tempo, and a melodic intonation shaped partly by the island's African heritage — enslaved people brought Yoruba, Kongo, and other languages whose influence lingers in vocabulary, music, and Afro-Cuban religious practice. The Cuban diaspora has also created a distinct Miami Spanish influenced by decades of exile.

Did You Know
01
Cuban Spanish drops many final consonants — 'usted' often sounds like 'usté' and 'Madrid' becomes 'Madrí' — a trait shared with other Caribbean varieties.
02
Lucumí, a liturgical language derived from Yoruba, is still used in Afro-Cuban Santería ceremonies, making Cuba one of the few places Yoruba-based speech survives outside Africa.
03
Cubans often use the subject pronoun 'tú' even when the verb already shows the subject, a feature linguists call 'pronoun retention' — unusual in most Spanish varieties.
